NOTES BY "MOTUROA." The 23rd contest lot the New Zealand Cup takes place to-day. V. Cotton will ride Machine Gun in tlie Stewards' Handicap to-day. Solution is reported to be in great fettle. On recent track form, day Spark should run prominently in his essays at the Cup meeting. The 'bookmaker question was finally settled by ■ the members of the A.K.C. at the special meeting held last. Mionday, and despite an eloquent appeal on 'behalf of the knights of the pencil by Mr \V. Haclcett, the meeting decided by 90 to 78 votis that bookmakers were to be. excluded from future gatherings of the Auckland' Racing Clujh. 'it will be interesting to note how the public lake to the new older of things, as there is no doubt the bookmaker Was the favourite medium of speculation with the thousands of silver bettors who patronise the Kllcrslic meetings. One point appears very clear, that is: taking all the clubs who have banished the bookie from their meetings, it will he seen lhey arc by far the most successful and progressive in the country. If the resolution adopted by the A.R.C. members tends to have a similar effect on the club rt will meet Willi the heartiest approval of every true follower of the game throughout the colony. Another phase of the quislion which crops up is if the tolalisalor is the legalised method of speculation permitted to Racing and Jockey Clubs bv the State, ev what right had the A.R.C. to obtain the tote permits and Mien, also, license .1.1 nook makers, who would 'thus diver! thousands of pounds from (lie machme on every racf . , laj , Tl|( , club of course bcnc/iled t,y the heavy license fees, while the Government lost the percentage on the amount diverted f rolu the machine by the bookmakers. Gladsome and Manir.pojo Kith claim an engagement in (he Melbourne Slakes, one mile and a (,uar- '(■;', we,ghl-for-age. ' 'I be fad i Ws has Ireii received from India of" the death of (i. 11. Sisley, formerly of Ibis district. Tip unfortunate fellow was killed whilst r ding is own mare, Deceitful Kate, in a steeplechase at liejinhay. The mare fell at one of the fences, and Sisley had his neck broken. The Feildiug J.C. has made rapid strides during (lie last few seasons. It is now proposed- to institute a £SOU classic race for two-year-olds, the distance fivi- furlongs, lo be known as the l'Yilding Stakes. Il will probably he instituted at the spring meeting, 19116, next. November. This event should meet with tip support of owners, as two-tcar-okis would he able to compete at Rtceartoii, Feildiug and Auckland, there be- I ing reasonable intervals inlcrwuiiig between these fixtures. The Wellington Racing Club n a vc appointed Mr J. H.- Poil-ii* a- l..indicapper for the ensuing seamen. Owing to heavy ra'o the A.K.I!. committee 'decided to postpone the opening day of the filing nicctiqg until Thu'sday next. The course lias been undiTg >i;ig an extensive overhaul and the new earhlvworli aioti having set was 'deemed unsafe for racing on. Gladsome has been heavily backed r»r the Melbourne Cup. The daughter of Seatou Dclaval has got through sonic creditable work on the tracks. ' Kmir's disqualification for the Kclispc Stakes was brought about through his rider leaving a lead bag containing of lead, in the horse's stall after weighing out. The Dannevirke Jockey Club have alPottcd £1100; in stakes for this reason, being an increase ol £305 compared with last year. The Hen. Hugh Mossman's tour-1-eai-old (illy, Klspeth (Soul t—Lady Knimelinc), who raced unsuccessfully as a iwo-year-old in Auckland, has apparently improved, At- Brisbane last month she won the Novice Handicap, wil-h top weighi, 9st. 21l>, easily by two lengths. The Mclhiurne Cup comes up (or decision on Tuesday next. The Tar-anaki-own.d Maniapolo still maintains pride of position in the betting market, and from the lienor of his track performances should go to tin' Post a warm favourite. Full Cry, Heroism, Multilid, and Urmadc are located at Mllerslie to fulfil engagements for the spring meeting. A Southctn scriiV' writes thai Stepdaucer is doing promising work al Riccarton, and adds that the mare was lpver better than al present. He expects lur to secure a good race, very shortly. Mr K. J. 0 J C SPRING MEETING. ANTICIPATIONS BY "MOTUROA." To-day the./ Canterbury J.octey; Club inaugurate the most important racing carnival of this colony, tho programme during the four days comprising our best handicap and classic events. . The New Zealand Cup and Welcome Stakes are the plums on to-day's card, and both promise to be contested 'by highclass and representative fields. The acceptances received for the minor events are most satisfactory, and the gathering promises to be one of the most successful events held by the club. The first problem for backers is the Spring Hurdle Race. Waiwcra lias a handy weight; lie is reported to be very well, and should be close to the leaders at the finish. Tupara, Handsome Rose, and Miss King may run well. The race bears an open appearance. I fancy Tupara 1 Waiwcra 2 Handsome Rose 3. The issue in the Maiden Plate, on form, should lie between Pas Scui and Gay Spark. Pas Seul made a good impression at Wellington.
