A proposal to assemble, the Taranaki Battalion together for a ilay's manoeuvres and field work in the vicinity of Stratford was made some time'ago, and heartily supported by the officers. An application to the Defence OHice, however, for the necessary permission to hold a parade on the King's Birthday met with such scant courtesy that the member for the district (Mr 10. M. Smith) was asked to put in a word in season. This, apparently, will have (he desired effect, as the Premier on Wednesday evening notified Mr Smith that he is in communication with the Commandant on the ■ subject:
