Fire at Waitara.
News was received in town oil Monday morning that a fire had broken out in some buildings in West Quay, Waitara, about ;i a.m., resulting in the destruction of the premises occupied, respectively, by the Borongh Council and the Clifton Countyi Council, in addition to the unoccupied building adjoining (owned by Mr W. D. Webster), in which the conflagration originated. By the strenuous effort! of the bucket brigades, the office oT Ihe Waitara Mail was saved, and the fire prevented from doing further damage. Mr Webster's property, is insured for £25(1 in the Law Union and Crown Insurance Company, which, on withdrawing from business in New Zealand, transferred its risks to the Alliance hisurauce Company, for whiclfMr F. P. Corkill is agent. The adjacent, building, owned by Mr", Baker, is coveited by a risk nf r ISO in the North British Company (Messrs l'auchope and Vubster, Uealj agents). The Harnour Board's property, which was damaged to the extent of S2i>, is insurid for £201) in the Royal oi'lice. The contenls of the Borough and County Council offices were salvaged intact. The origin of the fire, which caused some consternation in the vicinity, as it' was fcand liie conflagration would spread to other buildings, is a complete mystery. Mr Smyth and others who worked hard : 0 extinguish the flames, are to he comnunded for their eltorts.
