The chair was taken by the Mayor. The address consisted ciiiclly oi vituperations ot the Government and the sitting member. lho speaker advocated freehold tenure., tin- ousting of Ilif preseul Government, graduated subsidy to local bodies, ilie maintenance of the present- educational system, with a few alterations, a inoderatr .borrowing policy for llie purpose o( enabling the Treasury to pay the before referred l lo graduated subsidy. The speaker also briefly touched on several other subjects, being very severe on the matter of favouritism by the Ministry in dealing with provincial grants. Two or three questions were asked anil answered, and after a painful silence of some minutes a motion was proposed and seconded that the speaker receive a hear Iy vote oi thanks foe his ;«.l<lrcss, -but that l-hc meeting regret, owing to their contiileuee in Mr Jennings, they cannot support the candidature "of Jir Lecclt. The chairman declined to put, the proposition, as Ihe meeting was Mr Leech's and not Mr Jennings. After another brief silence another of the audience lose and proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Jennings for his address. This was received with applause awl laughter, joined in by llie proposer, who then com cloil -himself, and proposed a hearty vole of thanks to Mr Leech, some dozen tends being held up. A vote, of thanks to the chair brought a very cold meeting to a close.
