The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL. that occurred at tho Orphan Home, I'arnoll, Auckland, on Sunday, September 17, will | je fresh in the minds of the readers of this paper. This appuul is intended to make plain the extent of the loss, its effect upon the present condition of tho children, and the urgent necessity for Funds to provido adequately and wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts where this paper circulates have from time to time been cared lor in the Home, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies. 1.-TIIE LOSS. The two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron's Quarters, Start Ihningroom, Sewing room, Soa/nslre.ss' Bedroom and Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing and Furniture has been lost. What this means to the children and to the matron and her staff can hardly be conveyed by mere words. 2.—NEW BLTLUINUS. Tho matter of providing New Buildings has been receiving the careful consideration of the Hoard, as a\ypears by tho last two annual reports, nnd u Now Buildings Fund has been created. In providing permanent accommodation, tho safety of the children is a consideration of paramount importance, and this can only be secured in Buildings of Stone or Brick. 3.-THE COST. Of such liuildings on modern lines is "rjated at from £SOOO t& Idition to which it may be necessary to purchase land. 4.-THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Hoard's Endowments is fully absorbed in maintaining tho B'J children in the Home. The numbers have increased since 31st March, I'JOS, by 2S, and for the current year, owing to such increase, the Hoard anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, be increased by the expenses inevitably attendant upon thu fire. ..To take uny considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the work, of the Home, and prejudice tho well-being of the children. The New Building Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the Building des-t,-,„™l i« i']2uo. ble is £2300.
