Obituary.

HON. J, T. PKACOCK

CH RISTCH'URCI-1, Oct. 20. Tho Hon. J. T. Peacock died this moriiing. Deceased was the eldest sen oi Mi' John J. Peacock, and was_ born in 1827 in the HawUcslmry district of New South Wales. He came to New Zealand when fifteen years old, awl settled down in Canterbury 4'; a merchant and shipowner. He sold out ol that business in 1803, and visited England. lie was a member of the Provincial Council in the early days, and Secretary for Public Works for jtlwo years. In 18(19 he was elected member for .Lyttclton, and five years later was called to the Legislative Council. He was one of the original promolerx of the Kaiapoi Wollen Company, of the Union 'lnsurance Company, and of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Deceased, who was twice married, leaves a widow and two stepsons.
