The Orphan Home* Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL. ~ disastrous fire that occurred at the Orphan Home, I'arnell, Auckland on .Sunday, September 17, will he fresh m tho minds of the leaders of this paper. 'this appeal is intended to make plain tha extent of the loss, its cflect upon the present condition of tho children, and the urgent necessity for Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their future wt-lfare. Children from the districts where this paper circulates have from time !o time been cared tor in the 'lome, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies. 1.-THE LOSS. The two Main Dormitories arc absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron's Quarters, Staff Diningroom, Sewing loom. Seamstress' lledroom oiwl Hospital are totally destroyed, and, liesides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing ami Furniture has liecn lost. What this means to the children and to the matron anil her stall can hardly be conveyed by mere words. "-NEW HLTLDINUS. Tho matter of providing New Holdings has been receiving (ho careful consideration of the Hoard, as appears by thu lust two annual reports, ttnd a New Ruildings Fund has been created. In providing permanent accommodation, thy wafety of the children is a consideration of paramount importance, and this can only be secured in Buildings of Stono or lJrick. 3.-TIIE COST. Of such Jluildings on modern lines is roughly estimated at from £SOOO U £7OOO, in addition to which it may bo necessary to purchase land. 4.—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Hoard's Endowments is fully absorbed in maintaining the 89 children in the Homo. The numbers have increased since 31st March, 1905, by 28, and for the current year, owing to such increase, tho Hoard anticipates a debit balanco of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, be increased by the expenses inevitably attendant' upon tho tire. ..To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously handier the work of the Hotne, and prejudice tho well-being of the children. The New Building Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the Uuilding destroyed is £1250. Amount available is £231)0. Rough estimate of amount still required for Building is £ 1010 The Home has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years. It has been already stated dial the Board had bt*gun to form a lluilding Fund. Had it proved necessary tc mako a Public Appeal, in the future, for that fund, the amount asked for would have been comparitively small .VOW THERE IS NO ALTERNANATIVE: THE APPEAL HAS TO CO FOItTH TO-DAY FOR AT LEAST THE APPEAL OF THE CHILDREN For the sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake of thu larger work to be done now and in the years to come, and above all. in the name of Christ, for the sake of His little cnes, we appeal for help.
