The disastrous fire Hi at occurred at tho Orphan Home, I'arnell, Auckland, on Sunday, September 37, will be fresh in tho minds of tho readers of this paper. ' ' ■ This appeal 'is intended to inaWo plain the extent of the loss, its effect upon the present conditicn *>f the children, and the urgent necessity for Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their futuro 'frelfaro. Children, from the districts where this paper circuities have from time to titno .bccn cared for in the Home, which hss/, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies. I.—THE LOSS. Th« two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition,- the : Matron's. Quarters, Staff Dftringroom, 'Sewing room, Seamstrcsa' Bedrowu and Hospital are totally di-strcfyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing, ami Furniture has been lost. What this, means to the children and to the matron and her staff can hardly be conveyed by mere words. 2.-NEW BUILDINGS. The matter of providing Ntjw Btjildings has. been receiving tho careful consideration of tho Hoard, as pears by the last two aanual reports, «nd a New Building*' Fund has been created. In providing permanent accommodation, tho safety of th« children is a consideration of paramount import- 1 ance, and this can only bo secured in Buildings of Stono or' Brick. • 3.—THE COST, - 01 such Buildings on modern lines is roughly estimated at from £SOOO t* £7OOO, in addition to whioh it may be necessary to purchase land, 4.—TIIE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho inconiQ from the Ttaaivl's Endowments is .fully absorbed in maintaining tho 39 children in the Home. The nuinbirs hare .increased since ;»st March, 1905,.by. 28, and for the current) year, owing to such increase, tlia Boai"d anticipates a debit balnneo of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, bo increased by tho expenses inevitably attendant upon tho fire. ..To take any Considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the work, of ttvj Home, ami prejudice tho well-being of the children. The New RuiWiug Fund Account now stands at £-1110. The insuranco on the Building 'destroyed is £1250. Amount' available is £2300. Hough estimate of amount still required for Building is £4610 The Homo has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years. It has been already stated that the Board had tiefgun to form a Building Fund. Had it proved necessary to lirnko a l'ublic Appeal, in the future for that fund, the amount asked for would have been camparitively small NOW THERE IS NO ALTERNANATIYE: THE A ITEM,. HAS TO GO FOKTII TO-BAY FOR AT LEAST ,£SOOO. THE AITEAL OF THE CHILDREN For the sake of the g00d,,,>v.0i4 done in past years, for the safco of th« largor work to l>c done now and in the years to come, and above all. in the name of Christ, for the sake of His little cues, wo appeal for lU ' P ' CHARLES 11.
