The disastrous lire that occurred at tile Orphan Home, I'arnell, Auckland, on Sunday, Septanber 17, will be fn-sli in Hie minds of the readers of this paper. Ihis appeal is intended to makg plain the extent of the loss, its foct upon the present condition of the children, and the urgent necessity for Fumls to provide adequately and wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts where this paper circulates have from time ;o tiiuo been cared lor in the Home, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies. I.—THE LOSS. The two Main Dormitories are absolutely -destroyed, thai is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. in addition, the Matron's Quarters, Stall' Diningroom, Sewing room, Soa/nstress' lied room and Hospital are totally 'destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing ami Furniture has been lost. What this means to the children and to llu- matron and her stall' ea hardly be conveyed by mere words, 2.-XI3W BL'JLMXOS. The matter of providing New Buildings bus been receiving the careful consideration of the Hoard, as apIh?ars by the last two annual i ports, -ond a New buildings Fund has Ijveii created. In providing permanent accommodation, the safety of the children is a considetal ion of paramount, importance, and this can only be secured in Buildings of Stony or Brick. .T-THIO COST. Of surh Buildings on modern lines is roughly estimated at from £."»O00 t<\ £7OOO. in addition to which it nuiy be necessary to purchase land. 4.—TUH FINANCIAL POSITION. Thu income from the Board's Endowments is fully absorbed in maintaining tho 89 children in the Jlonie The numbers have increased since lilst March, 11)05, by 'JB, and for tho current year, owing to such increase, the Board anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, be increased by the expenses inevitably attendant upon tho fire. .To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously lvamj>er the work of the llomc, and preji dice the well-being of the children. The New Building Fund Account now stands at £lllO. Tho Insurance on the Building destroyed is £1250. Amount available is £2360. Hough estimate of amount still required for Building is £4(>4o The Home has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years. It has been iilready slated (hat the Board had 'bHgun to form a Build Fund. Had it proved necessary to mako a Public Appeal, in the fut for that fund, the amount asked for would have bevn comparatively small NOW TIIHHE IS NO ALTEUXANAT EVE : THE APPEAL HAS TO UO FOKTII TO-DAY FOiv AT,,OAST £ sooo> THE APPEAL OF THE CHILDREN For tin; sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake of thu lurgvr work to be 'done now ami in tin* yi-ars to romp, and above all, in the, name of Christ, (or the sake of His little mi's, we appeal for llelp.
