THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.
AN AWKWAItD INCIDENT. l'almerston North, Oct. 10. Air Kiusclla Ims written to the A. and P. Association disapproving of the acceptance of Collctt and Company's offer of n prize of £2OO for butter at the Winter Show, lie remarks: —"These people arc about the only,
exporters who have been dissatisfied with our methods of grading produce, particularly dairy butter, which is the class chiefly handled by them, and I consider that this is a direct moans of 'getting at' the good work of our grading system." In his reply to the firm ho says Ihut he has no hesitation in saying, in his capacity as tho responsible head of tho dairying service, that neither tho oflcr nor tho motive aro in order—far from it—so far as any good results being derived from such a scliemo which would tend to bring about any improvement in the system of our , co-operative' instruction and grading, or assist in strengthening the mutual feeling which now exists between the producers and the dairying division. He subfauts that were the proposals carried out not practical good would accrue to the klairymen of New Zealand, and that ili would only, tend to unsettle a system which is to-day giving entire satisfaction to all but an exceedingly! small proportion of produeorg and exporters.
Considerable discussion followed the reading of these letters, and it wag finally decided : That in view of the report from the Government Dairy Commissioner, re Messrs Collett and CompanyV offer, the Association regrots that it is unable to accept the same in the terms offered ; but in order to in any way assist in placing our butter direct to| the West of England ports with hotter advantage to the producers, wo would gladly consider any further offer the Gnu may bo inclined to make.
