Perilous Experiences at Sea.
Howard Smith Company's steamer I'eregrine, which arrived at Melbourne on .September IS, from ,Syil, ne.v, had one of the most exciting times in her history oivlhe run'down the coast, /the! conditions' being so bad tliat many of the pusseiigers became panic stricken. The vessel was between Jtain Jlead and (iabo island, ult the, Victorian coast, and about Io.KO in the morning, a huge sea struck her-on tho starboard bow, and before she could rise on the sea a second enormous wn\e rose high over the slnrboard bow and crashed on the forecastle deck, carrying away Ihe litti|ngs and sweeping; with 'invsUble force , fiinto live well-deck, which was filled with water to the top of the rail. A porthole in the saloon was forced open, and a great body of water ran J in'o the saloon and the cabins, canuf ing the panic-stricken passengers toi shriek in' terror. The occupants <>i the lower berths wore, at once under the impression that the ship was going 'down, but as the vessel gradually recovered herself and the water drifted away, comparative quietness | was restored.
