APPEAL.
The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland.
Tho disastrous lire that occurred at the Orphan Home, I'arnell, Auckland, on Siniday, September 17, will lie fresh in the minds of the readers oi this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain th« extent of the loss, its effect upon the present condition of tho children, and the urgent necessity for Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts where this pajHT circulates have from time to time been cared for in the Home, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies.
1.-TIIE LOBS. The two Main Di>rmi(ories aw absolutely destroyed, that is. the sleeping accommodation of inn- 7<» children. Jn addition, the .Matron's Quarters, Staff Miningi-nom. Sewing room. Seamstress' Hulroom and Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing ami Furnitui-0 has been lost. What this means to the children and to the matron and her stall can hardly l>e convened by mere words. 2.-XKW JJUILUIXOS. Tho matter of providing New Iluildings has been receiving tho careful consideration of the Hoard, as appears by tho last two annual reports, <uid a New Buildings Fund has been created. I In providing permanent accommodation, the safety of tho children is a consideration of paramount import-! ancc, and this can only be secured in] Buildings of Stone or .Brick. I
3.-THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines is roughly estimated at from £.">000 U £7OOO, in addition to nhieh it may be necessary to purchase laud. 4.—THE FINANCIAL rOSITION. Tho income, from the Hoard's Kudowmniis is fully absorbed In muin- • aining tho 80 children in the Home. The numbers liuve increased since 31st Marc*. lilOj. by 28, and for tho current year, owing to such increase, tha Hoard anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This, will, of course, be increased by tho expenses inevitably attendant upon! tho fire. .To take any considerablesum from the Capital for building! purposes would very seriously hamper the work, of the Home, and prejudice tho well-being of the children. The New Huilding Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the Huilding destroyed is £1251).
Amount available is £2:ilin. Rough estimate of amount sti required for Huilding is £-I<i<b The Home has not received any (Joveroment subsidy for the last twenty years. It has lieeii already staled that the Hoard had to form a Huilding Fund. Had it proved necessary fe make a I'ulilic Appeal, in (he future,l for that fund, the amount asked for would have been cnmparitively small NOW TIIKKE IS NO AI.TCIiNANATIVK : THF. AI'I'KAI.
