APPEAL.

The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland.

The disastrous lire that occurred at the Orphan Home I'aruell, Auckland, on Sunday, September 17, will bo fresh in the minds of the readers of this paper. This appeal is intended to make pluin thu extent of the loss, its ef-' feet upon the- present condition ofj thu children, and the urgent necessity for Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their future welfare. I Children from the districts where! this paper circulates have from time' to time been cared for in thu Home,' which has, therefore, a particular as I well as a general cluim upon your! sympathies.

1.-THE LOSS. Thu two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, (he sleeping accommodation of over 70 eliil-j dron. In addition, the Matron's ' Quarters, Staff IMningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom andllos-l pital are totally .destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing and Furniture has been lost. | What this means to the children and to the matron and her staff can I hardly be conveyed by mere words.

2.-NEW BUILDINGS. The matter of providing New Build-, ings has been receiving tho careful' consideration of the Board, as ap-j pears by tho last two annual reports, find n New Buildings Fundi has been created. j In providing permanent accommodation, tho safety of the children is a' consideration of paramount import-: anco, and this can only be secured in Buildings of Stono or Brick, I

3.-TIIE COST. Or such Huildings on modorn lines is roughly estimated at from £SOOO t« £7OOO. in addition to which it may be necessary to purchase land. i 4.-TIIE FINANCIAL POSITION. | Tlia income from the Hoard's Endowments is fully absorbed in main-, taining the 89 children in the Home. The numbers have increased since 31st March; 1903, by 28, and for the current year, owing to such increase, the Hoard anticipates a debit balance, of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, be increased iiy the c\pens,s inevitably attendant upon the lire. .To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the work of the Home, and preiu-' dice the well-being of the children', j

The New Building Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the liuilding destroyed is £1250. Amount available is £2:1(10. Rough estimate of amount still required for liuilding is £1(>10 The Home has not received any l.'ovi-nunent subsidy i.>r the last twenty years. It has been already stale.! that the Hoard had bogun to form a liuilding Fund. Had it proved necessary to mako a Public Appeal, in the future, for that fund, the amount asked for would have been comparitively small NOW THERE IS NO ALTERNANATIVK: TUB APPEAL HAS TO (JO FORTH TO-DAY FOR ATLEAST £SOOO,

THE APPEAL OF THE CHILDREN, For the sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake of the larger work to be done now and in the years to come, and above all, in the name of Christ, for the sake of His little cnes, wo appeal for help.
