The Orphan Home, Panned, Auckland. APPEAL. The disastrous fire that occurred nt thu Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland, on Sunday, September 17, will be fresh in tho minds of the readers of this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain tho extent of tho loss, its effect upon the present comlilicn of tho children, and the urgent necessity for Fnmls to provide adequately and wisely for their fut\iro •welfareChildren from the districts where this paper circulates have from time to tiiiio been cared for in the Home, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies. 1.-THE LOSS. Tho two Main Dormitories am absolutely destroyed, Hint is, Hie sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. Jn addition, the Matron's Quarters, Stall INningToom, Sewing room. Seamstress' Iledroom and Hospital aro totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity bf Clothing and Furniture has been lost. What this means to tho children and to the matron nml her stall can hardly be conveyed by mere words. 2.-NEW BUILDINGS. | Tha matter of providing New Bui Idja 'has been receiving tho careful consideration of tho Board, as appears by tho last two annual reports, ■and a New Buildings Fund has been created. In providing permanent accommodation, tho safety of tho children is a. consideration of paramount importance, and this can only he secured in Buildings of Stons or Brick. 3.—THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines is { roughly estimated at from £SOOO t& , £7OOO, in addition to which it may be necessary to purchase land. 4.-TIIE FINANCIAL POSITION. ' Tho incorao from the Roand's Endowments is fully absorbed in maintaining tho 89 children in the Home. The numbers have increased since 31st March, 1903, by 28, and for tho " current year, owing to such increase, , tho Board anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This ' will, of course, be increased by the * expenses inevitably attendant' upon J tho lire. .To take- any considerable ■ sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the work, of the Home, and prejudice the well-being of the children. The New Building Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the. Building des- ' troyed is £1230. Amount available is £2;S(iO. Rough estimate of amount still required for Building is £IO4O The Home has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years. 11 has l>een already stated that the Board had bngim to form n Building Fund. Hail it proved necessary te mako a Public Appeal, in the future, for that fund, the amount asked for would have -been comparitively small NOW THERE IS NO ALTERXANATIVE : THE APPEAL HAS TO C! 0 FORTH TO-BAY FOR £SOOO, THE APPEAL OF THE CHILDREN For the sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake of the larger work to be 'done now ami in the years to come, mid above all, in tho name of Christ, for the sake of His Utile cues, we appeal for help.
