APPEAL.

The Orphan Home. Parnell, Auckland.

I he disastrous fire thul occurred at the Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will be iresh in the minds of the readers of this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain the extent of the loss, its eflect upon the present, condition of the children, ami the urgent necessity' for Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts whore this paper circulates have from lime to lime been cared Tor in the Home winch has, therefore, a particular asWell as a general claim upon vour sympathies. I -THE LOSS. The two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 71.1 children, in addition, the Matron's Quarters, start Diningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom ami Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable ejuautity of Clothing and Furniture has been lost. What this means to the children mid to the matron and her staff (ran hardly be conveyed by mere words.

2.-NEW BUILDINGS. The matter of providing New Buildings 'has been receiving the careful consideration of the Board, as appears by tho last two annual reports, •and a Now Buildings Fund has been civated. In providing permanent accommodation, the safety of-thu children is a consideration of paramount importance, and this can only be secured in Buildings of Stone, or Brick.

3.-THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines is roughly estimated at from £7,000 la £7OOO, in addition to which it may be necessary to.purchase land. 4.-THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Board's Endowments is fully absorbed -in maintaining the. 89 children in the Home. The numbers have increased since .'ilst March, I!K>.">, by 28. and for the I current year, owing to such increase, the Hoard anticipates a debit balance] of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, be increased by -the expenses inevitably attendant upon' the lire. ..To take any considerable sum from the Capital for buildingj purposes would wry seriously hamper the work, of the Home, and prejudice the well-being oi the children.

The New lluilding Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the Building destroyed is £12.")( l. Amount available is L'li'Mt. Hough estimate of amount still required for lluilding is iMti'lo Tlie Home lias not received any novcnnneiit subsidv for tile last twenty rears.

It lias been already sialyl that tile Hoard had begun to form a Building Fund. Had it proved necessary to make, a l'uhlic Appeal, in the future, lor that fund, the amount asked (or would have been comparitivelv small. NOW THERE IS -NO ALTEUXANATIVE : THE APPEAL HAS TO CO FORTH TO-DAY FOR AT LEAST THE APPEAL OF THE CHILDREN For the sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake of the larger work to be'done now and in the years to come, and above all. in the name of Christ, for the sake of His little cues, we appeal for help. CHARLES M. NELSON', Chairman. W. E. CILLAM, Vice-Chairman. Win. Calder. A. Littler. Geo. MacMnrrav. T. Charter. U. A. Carver. W. W. Hill. 0. H. Ashton, It. B. Morrow. A. V. Mac lonakl. Robert Walker. Wm. .leffery. V. Thos. Ward. Carlton llav. C. J. TUXKS, Hon. Treasurer.

I confidently commend this appeal to the charitable consideration of those who care for Christ's little ones. I am assured that the Orphan Home Hoard will take >all wants in. tu consideration in their plans for the future. il. It, AUCKLAND. Bishopsconrl. September 22, 100,1. NOTE—Subscriptions will be glnd ly received by any member of the Hoard or by the Secretary, Mr W. (i. H. .lackinan. Fort Street. Auckland, or at the ollice. of this paper.
