The Madras Cholera Epedemic.
Under date August 21 a Madras correspondent writes :—"The cholera epidemic in Madras continues mutilated, life daily returns still living alarmingly high. Outbreaks are now reported 'in ho lit the General Hospital and Government Lunatic Asylum. Last week the death rale was over 125 per mile. Miss Alice Brown, a European missionary attached to the Methodist Episcopal Zenana Mission, Madras, died of cholera yesterday. A number of the schools and collcages in the city arc closed." The weekly returns of births and deaths within the municipality ol the city of MadraS, reported from 12th to 18th August, 11)1)5, show (reports Hits Madras Times) a total of 500 births, composed of 251 males and 24!) females, and a birth-rate of 51.4 as against 41.x, the mean for the ten previous years. The total number of deaths during the same period was 1,232, composed of 00<i males and 62(i females, and the death-rale 125,7, as compared with 50.(i, the mean for the ten previous years The. deaths are classified as follows :- Plague, mi ; Solera, 43:1 ; smallpox, 8, measles, i) ; fevers,, 175; dysentery 17.) ; diarrhoea, 25; other causes, 407; Kurotieans, 4; Kast Indians, 27"alive Christians, 58, Hindus, 991 •' , Mahonmiedans, 152 ; others, none '
