The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL. Thp disastrous firo that occurred at tho Orphan Home, l'arnell, Auckland, on Sunday, September 17, will bo fresh in tho minds of the readers of tills paper. This appeal is intended to make plain th« extent of the loss, its effect upon the present comlilicn of tho children, and the urgtrnt necessity for Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their future nil fare. Children from the districts where this paper circulates have from timo to timu been cared for in the Ilomo, which has, therefore, a particular as well an a £vjtiTai claim upon your sympathies.
i.-the loss. Iho two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, tho Matron's Quarters, Staff Dinlngrooni, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom and Hospital arn totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing and Furniture has been lost. What this means to the children and to the matron and her staff can hardly bo conveyed by mere words. 2.-XEW BUILDINGS. Tha matter of providing New Buildings has been receiving Hie cartful consideration of the Board, as appears, by tho last two annual reports, end a Xew Buildings Fund has been created.
In providing permanent accommodation, t hv. safety oi Iho children is a consideration of paramount import* aiicc, and this can only be secured in Buildings oi Stono or Brick. B.—THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines is roughly vstimatod at from £500(1t» £7OOO, in addition to which it inay be necessary to.purchase land. 4.—THE FIXAN'CIAL POSITION, Tho income from the Board's Endowments is fully absorbed in maistaining the 89 children in the Horn*. The numbers have increased since 31st March, 1905, by 28, and for th<i current year, owing to such increase, tho Hoard anticipates a debit ljalani-9 of expenditure over recwipts. This will, of course, be increased by tho expenses inevitably attondant upon thii fire. ..To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the "worl\ of the Homo, and prejudice the well-being of tho children.
The NVw Building Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insuranco on the Building destroyed is £1250. Amount available is £2300. Rough estimate of amount still required for Building is £4610 The Home has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years. II has been already stated that the Board had bnyun to form a Building Fund. Had it proved necessary tc mako a I'ublic Appeal, in the future, for that fund, the amount asked for would have bevn comparitively small.
