Custr>m House, New Plymouth. 26th Sept., 190 H. The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL. Tha disastrous lire that occurred at the Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will |» fresh iu tha miirds of the readers of this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain tha extent of the loss, its effect upon the present condition of -the children, und the urgvnt necessity for Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts where this paper circulates have.from time to time In-nl cared for in the llonio, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies.

I—THE LOSS. The two Main Dormitories arc absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron's Quarters, Staff Diningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bt-drooin and Hospital nru totally -destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing ami Furniture has been lost. What this means to the children and to the matron and her staff can hardly be conveyed by mere words. 2.-XEW UI'ILDINCS. Thu matter of providing Now Buildings has been receiving the careful consideration of the Hoard, as appears by th« last two annual reports, <uid a New Buildings Fund has been created. In providing permanent accommodation, the safety of the children is & consideration of paramount importance, and this can only be secured in BuiVlings of Stono or Brick.

.-THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern linos is roughly estimated at from £.">000 t& £700(1, in addition to which it may ho necessary to.iiurcha.se land. 4.—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Board's Endowments is fully absorbed In maintaining tho B'J children in the Home. The numbers have increased since 31st March, 1905, b.v 28, and for the current year, owing to such increase, the Hoard anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, be increased by the expenses inevitably attendant upon tho fire. .To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the work, of the Home, ami prejudice thv w ell-being of the children.

The N>w Uuilding Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the Building destroyed is £1250. Amount available is £2.'WO. Rough- estimate of amount still required for Uuildin# is £-1(510 The Home has not received any (Jovermnent subsidy for the last twenty years. It hafi been already stated that the Hoard had bfiyun to form a Ituilding Fund. Had it proved necessary tc niako ft Public Appeal, in thv future, for that fund, tlu- amount asked for would have been comparitively small. NOW thkhk ih no alterxaXATIVE : THE APPEAL HAS to co foutil t<muy for " u:vst £SOOO. TIIK A PIT.
