RAID ON AN OPIUM DEN
HEAVY FINES. AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. (Per Press Association.) The premises of a Chinese boarding-house-keepar, Ah Pee, were unexpectedly visited last night by Sergeant Hanson and Constable Sims, who were on the lookout for opium smoking. The sequel was heard this morning in the Police Court, when Joe Yen pleaded guilty to having been found smoking o t )irm. He was fined £lO or 18 days' imprisonment. All I'ee was charged with having permitted smoking of opium, but he denied the ofl'enee Sergeant Hanson said he found Fee lying in bed with Yen. Both weie smoking, but Fee was using tob.ic.-'o. When the "boss" was inquired for, Fee to himself and said "Me." rhtee tins and a small pot of opium were found with sm iking a-p:,ratus which lay between the two men. When Constable Sims l.ad given similar evidence, Foe declared that the real owner of the bouse was in gaol, and that he was looking after it for him. He was fined £5 with costs, or a. month's imprisonment.
