The World's Tallest Tree.
A forestry teat is haing carried out upon the tallest tree in the .world, namely—the Grizzley Giant, jntfs (says Cassell's Magazine) is one ot the .famous Caliloraian redwood trees. Experts 1 in forestry declare tint it is dying of old age, and the Highway Commissioner of California ins decided to prolong its tile ;by removing the decayed portions of the roots and boughs, and by maintaining its equilibrium by a number of cables, "winch wiH |be so placed to support the trunlc in a rigid upright position* At present the tree Is leaning 18lt beyond its centre of gravity, and as the monster is 105 ft 6gh and 160 ft in circumiercnce at its base, the erection ot the cables Will be in itselt quite an engineering* feat. Many of the roots hara rotted right away, and these will be removed, and the cavities thus made filled in with a wholesome kind of cement, >just as at dentist fills Uhj cleansed cavities of a decayed tooth. Jhen the decaying limbs and branches o( the giant are to be "doctored." They will be treated in much the same way as the roots. Attes the forest doctors have finished with the Grizzly Gtiant, tlwy will give their attention to the other tig trees in 'the same grove, and it is to be hoped their efforts will prolong the lives ot these world-famous trees, Scientists who have examined the Grizzley Giant declare it to be 5000 years old, in which case it is the Oldest living! thing on the face Of the earth,
