1A DRAMATIC SUICIDE. , •KALGOORIE, Sept. 1 Last evening Mr George IV. De Winton, a well-known resident, ami secretary of the Kalgoorlie Club, committed suicide under dramatic circumstances. Lato in the afternoon Dr. Brownless received a note in the .deceased's handwriting, asking him to come to De Winton's private residence, at nine p.m.. as the housekeeper might be ill. The doctor did not regard the letter seriously. About three o'clock this morning, however, he was informed by telephone that something dreadful had happened at De Winton's home, ami en arrival there found De Winton dead from a dose of morphia, and the housekeeper, Mrs .Leon, suffering acutely from Hie effects of the same poison. Remedies were promptly applied to relieve Mrs Leon, and she is now out of danger. The two, it has been learnedj mutually agrvi.il to end their lives together. Mrs Leon owes This, it is thought, was foreseen by her recovery to swallowing too large a dose, which induced vomiting. De Winton. who. it is supposed, in the light of his note to Dr.' lirownless, purposely gave the woman a sufficient quantity to bring about the result mentioned. That both were determined to terminate their existence is shown by the fact that on tho table, of the room where the deceased lay were found letters addressed to Dr. Brownless, containing De Winton's and Mrs Leon's dress rings, and instructions as regards the funeral. Another letter containing £3l, addressed to a local .undertaker, was also lying on the -table, as well as several packages containing money duo to tho servant and local traders. De Winton was last seen yesterday afternoon, when he appeared in good spirits and his usual health. It is not known what induced him to take his life in such a determined manner. He had been a resident of Kalgoorlie for the past four years. He was some years ago owner of a coffee plantation in India and on leaving that country he returned to England and resided thereuntil coming to West Australia. He was at one time secretary to the Devonshire Club, and was a member of the National Reform Club, Lon don.
