Old Age Pensions and Charitable Aid.

AUCKLAND, Sept, li. • A letter was read from the DeputyRegistrar of old age pensions at a meeting of the Charitable Aid Board, referring to the increased amounts payable to old age pensioners under the Amending Act of this 1 , year, and ■ asking what amount the Board proposed to charge pensioners for maintenance at the Costlcy Home, and what proportion would to handed to the men monthly ? The Chairman moved : "That the - letter, be referred to the Costlefl Home and CharitablcAid Committee! with power to act,' 1 Mr Garland said he was informed that 10s per week was now being paid to pensioners, While he was one of those who thought the increase was jusitifted, in view of ife. buoyant condition of tho r?venue, tie could hardly believe it until informed upon the very best authority that the pro- - visions of the.Act had been put into force by an Order-in-Council. It seemed to him very extraordinary that such a course of procedure should be adop i ed ;: The Act > s ° '*r, had only passed through the Lower House, and it had not yet been passed by the Upper House. Members of the Board would probacy want to know wh7?he information was sought. Was it Intended by the Government to build a home in which to maintain theiioW age pensioners ?
