In the early sixties ho joined the service of the Canterbury Provincial Government, and was sent to Hokitika, on the outbreak of tho | West Coast goldlields, with other Canterbury officio la. He was after- ! wards for many years in the service of the (leneral Government, and was on the staff of 'the Public Works amil Marine Departments. I
