FOOTBALL.

Players selected to take part in the match between the Taranaki and YV anganui team and the Australian combination, to be played at Hawera on Saturday afternoon, are expected on the scene by noon to-morrow, with a view to practice. The display ol the visitors is being looked forward to with interest, and on form the match looks a good thing for the home team.

THE AUSTRALIANS FIRST WIN(Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Sept. 6. Australia defeated Hanuwatu and Hawke's Bay combined to-day, by seven points (an unconverted try and a goal from a mark) to ."> (a coin verted try). The game on the whole was in favour of the Australians, who apparently found the dry ground and perfect weather conditions to their liking. Their forwards were clean and clever in foot work, and their backs seldom made a mistake, handling the ball very prettily. For the visitors, Wickham kicked a goal from a mark by Oxley, taken near the half way line, and McLean scored a try. For Hanawatu McNae scored and Ward converted. Nearly six thousand spectators were present at the match.

(Pel Preae Association.) INVERCARUILL, Sept. 6. The Wellington v. Southland football match, played to-day iu bright, windless weather, on a dry ground, ended, alter a last game, in a draw, each side scoring six points. In the first spell Collcrton scored a try lor Wellington, and 6. Spencer kicked a penalty goal in the second half. For Southland Hughes got a try at the start, and just on the call of time Grace secured another, which should have been converted. The teams were equal in weight, but the visitors were faster on their feet than their opponents.
