Wife Murderer Sentenced to Death.

J, Daniel Swan was.Jxwlay~lQjind puiljty q| > jttw,.mi߫st K -oC his wife B?iri Tnvercargill, by attacking her with a flat iron, and afterwards cutting her throat with an old razor. No witnesses were called for the defence, but accused's counsel, Mr Barclay, argued that the Crown had produced no evidence that Swan had cut his wife's throat. He also suggested "sudden mania'" as the cause for the crime.
Judge Cooper said that w&s a matterthat might be argued before the Judge.
The jury retired for an hour, and returned with a verdict of guilty of wilful murder, and sentence of death was passed.
Swan was little, if at all, agitated on hearing the sentence, and on getting into an adjoining room asked for a cigarette.
