Charge of Theft.

AUCKLAND, Aug. 31. A young man named William Henry Cowan was charged at the Police Court with having; committed a theft of £64 17s at Te Aroha on Aug. 4, having failed j.p, pay the same to several parties, and with a sii/.i. lav charge on Aug. 4 at Morrinsville, involving a sup of £62 igs. William George Meddings, Inspector of' Telegraphs, stated that he employed accused in January last in charge of a number of men. It was part of 'his duty to keep a time-sheet, and send it periodically to witness, who, after certifying it, gave instructions to accused 1q draw the amount stated to pay the men. The pay-sheet for May was for £62 15s, which was duly certified, and authority given to Cowan to draw the money from the Morrinsville Post Office. At the end oi July another sheet was sent for £64 17s, and this was certified to in the usual way and returned, to. accused with, instructions tq draw the amount from the Te Aroha Post Office. In consequence of . what he hoard witness laid an information against accused. Cowan joined the tplegiaph service about live yoars ago. He had shown a good deal of ability and had given general satisfaction.
