Theatre Royal.
Vest's Pictures ud tbe Brescius. This clever combination made its first appearance in New- Plymouth last, evening, when «, large, and very, appreciative audience, assembled in , tne 'theatre Koyal. Those present enj joyed an unique entertainment, consisting of pictures, excellent music, £,ood singing, and kincmatograph comicalities that literally caused shrieks ot laughter. The reputation ol "West's Pictures and the Brescians" is well doserved, lor the show is both high class and amusing, and should cm 110 account be missed. 01 the pictures wo may say that they are amongst the best, probably the very best, that have been seen in the colony. After a few scenes of recent appearances of the King and Queen, the audience were taken for a tour through Italy, many charming views being displayed, the series being climaxed 'by a realistic representation of Mount Vesuvius in eruption. The march of the Cameron Highlanders through Edinburgh was a. splendid picture, and was loudly . applauded, a like reception being given to an exciting tccne, "firemen to the rescue." A series of fifteen pictures in connection with toe-tarming was very instructive, and the splendid, views of Barcelona Park were much appreciated. Interspersed at intervals wcro some tragic events and some comical, tics, the latter being excruciatingly funny, and at the same time without a trace of vulgarity. The concluding item was the very latest coloured spectacle for the kinematograph, known as "Whirling the World." This wonderful production is fully described in the last number of the London Magazine, but it mast be seem to 'be appreciated. It is intensely amusing, and represents, a la Jules Verne, an extraordinary voyage of fourteen members of ,the Eccentric Club, who use steam engine, automobile, airship, and submarine in exploring the universe. Their advent 1 tures are sensational, but finally they reach "Home, Sweet Home" in safety. Midway in the programme the Brescians took possession of the stage and it- did not take the audience long to perceive that they had seven talented performers «in front of. them. ' Whether in their orchestral playing, or their solos, their concerted singing or their ballads, or the clever whimsicalities of the humourist of the company, Mr Fred Mills, the audience were eager for, imore, and en- ' cores were numerous and hearty ■ without doubt. The artistes responsible for a very delightful concert were the Misses Domenica, Antonia and Adclina Martinengo, Miss Sarah Hendy, Mr Rudall Hay ward and Mr 1 Fred Mills, and each were, about as 1 perfect as possible. As the company 1 is remaining over the week we shall have the pleasure of referring to these artistes again. Meanwhile, we can wilh the fullest confidence advise a visit to the Theatre Royal, certain that no one will be disappointed I with what is to be seen and heard. The programme will be repeated this evening, but to-morrow there will he an absolute change, and therefrom till the end of the season :hc programme will be altered nightly. We have been requested to mention that the matinee on Saturday, will commence at 1.15 p.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., to enable country patrons to catch the afternoon train. OnSaturuay night the performance will begin at 7.30 and finish at 10 o clock. The companv paid a special retaining fee for the Onehunga steamer to be kept till 11.30 p.m. We understand that Mr West will, on Wednesday at noon, take an animated picture of Devon Street from the corner of Egmont Street. This picture will be developed and shown * here during the season, but as it will orm one of a series that Mr Wrst is taking of New Zealand for exhibition abroad, it is~«up._,tQUs" to make Devon Street look as as DossiWewhcn the camera gets towort - Should the weather not be fine toZr "day C PlCtUre Wi ' b ° taken 011
