The leader of live Opposition asked the Minister of Marine whether his attention r.a.l i;.cu called to the (act |tii«it the iNew Plymouth Harbour Board had increased the passenger wharfage charge from one shilling to two shillings, or four shillings (or the round trip, He hoped that the increased charge would lie agreed to by the Minister. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones said the matter referred to had been brought under liis notice the oilier day, aivd it would have his very careful consideration. The question has been raised in London whether the Australian States have any legal right to fly the Hag which a carefully-selected committee decided on a year or so ago as a suitable ensign lor the newborn Commonwealth. Also exception has been taken to the Commonwealth's coat .of arms and seal wirich are now in use. Mr Deakin, the Prime Minister, has apparently set, these doubts at rest. He has stated that the authority for the _ use _ol ensign was given by the King's Warrant on February tOlh, 1903, but there still remains doubt as to the anthorsation of the arms and seal. The matter is being inquired into.
Students of electricity at the Sydney University arc now to have the opportunity, i! they choose to avail themselves of it, of undergoing a course of practical training at the Ultimo power-house, the largest establishment ot the kind south ot the Line. The only requirement on t'.c part of the power-house authorities is that three students shall regard themselves as employees for the time being and conform to all the rules which the ordinary workmen have to observe. As a training for electrical engineers no course or study could be more effective or more likely to produce thoroughly equipped electricians.
As the new railway station at Dunedin draws on towards completion it Incomes evident that, on a general view, and with the possible exception of Sydney, Dunedin is to have the handsomest railway premises in Australasia, (says the Otago Daily Times). In Melbourne, although there j lias been much improvement during recent years, the ugliness and discomfort of the railway stations have passed into a proverb 1 , Brisbane and Adelaide are poorly equipped in this respect ; and the stations at H'obart and at Launeeston arc very wretched structures indeed. When the new station is completed, Dunedin will be well abreast of the time in this matter also. The buildings are already good to look upon, and in most populous British centres the railway stations are especially notable for the squalid quality of* their ugliness. A rather amusing incident occurred in the Insolvency Court at Melbourne recently. A witness declined to give Hie address of a lady who had left Victoria, on the gro'.iml that iv h.»' received it in confidence. A writ of attachment was issued against him, but this was set aside by the Full Court on a technical point. But the Full Court expressed the view that the question ought, to be answered, so when the case came on again witness proceeded to answer the important question. H'c said the lady had left the colony eight months ago, and the last address she mentioned was Post Office, Auckland, New Zealand ; but lie did not know on what particular date she was there, or where she had gone! After all this trouble, the Court had to try to look pleasant.
Men are better off (writes the agriculture editor of the Otago Witness) with regular employment at a cur. rent weekly wage, wet and dry, than with casual labour at 7s or 8s per day, with broken time through wet weather and .other causes. But regular employment with board and lodging is, as a rule, only available for single men, and married men with children have-to pay rent for a home except in cases where a cottage is provided for them on a farm or station. This paying of rent fur a home is a heavy drain upon the earnings of » casual labourer, and ,1 .have always maintained that, it is I a good policy for a farmer who employs several regular hands to provide cottages with garden grcunil on [the farm. Of course, I am writing in the interest of farmers, and feel confident that better results can be got from a man settled on the farm and having an interest in his garden , plot than from single men, who, as a rule, are fond of freq.uent change and less settled,in their habits. The teams and (fie harness suffer from a .rcquent change of drivers, and moreover, single men of unsteady habits are not to be depended .upon when (here are any festivities going on in the neighbourhood.
