FOOTBALL.
THE AiltftUiiM'AKAliAKl MATCH. To-day's foot'i/all match between the Taranaki and Auckland "reps," which is looked upon as the principal event ot the year in the Taranaki football world, promises to tie one ol the keenest contests ever fought out between these Old rivals. Great interest is being taken in tile fixture throughout the province, and a big crowa is expected to assemble at the racecourse ground, where the kick-oil takes place at 3 o'clock. The weather, even if unfavourable, will not materially affect the play on such a hard, fast ground. Admirable train arrangements, and the fact of the business establishments in town closing during the progress of the match, will assist the success of the fixture. On their arrival yesterday morning the Auckland men, who have Mr Shtvhan as manager, were met by Messrs Humphries and Buchanan on behai 1 of the Taranaki Rugby Union's Man agenient Committee, The team put up at the Criterion Hotel. In the afternoon a practice at the racecourse soon put to rights those of the team who felt a little "groggy" from the effects of the sea trip.
The touring team comprises :-?• Backs, Newdick, Twiname, Wynyard, Magee, Todd, Kiernan, Young; forwards, Herring, Dunning, Trevarthen, McGuire, Francis, Bonefia, McGuire ; Marshall ; wings, W, Tyler, Fraser. "Scobie" McKenzie, who could not get away in time for to-day's match, will join the team on Thursday. The team to play Taranaki this afternoon has not yet been definitely selected. The average weight of the forwards is stated to be 13st, and the backs between lOst 81b and list. The Taranaki team is as follows Full-back, Coleman ; three-quarters, Nicholas, Hardgreavcs, K. Bourke ; five-eighth, Joe Thomas ; half, Frewin ; Guy, Rothery ; forwards, Osborne, Wilson, McKay, Crawley, J. Young, Ryan and Hamerton. In the evening the Auckland team will attend the Star Club's social dance in the Theatre Royal. The arrangements point to a most successful gathering, as a large attendance at these functions is a foregone conclusion. During the evening presentations will. be made to Mr tjymes for many years selector for the Taranaki "reps," and to Mr F. T Bellringer.
On Saturday Auckland will play a match with Wellington, and on Tuesday next with Wanganui. Kiernan has been elected captain. The Selection Committee includes the captain the manager and J. McGuire.
