SENSATIONAL MAIL ROBBERY
bus cot or i mm. REGISTERED LETTERS ABSTRACTED. (Received Aug. 21, 11.32 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 22. A sensational robbery has occurred on the Western mail train. On its arrival at Redfern this morning it was discovered that nine ordinary mail bags from stations on the CowraDlaney branch had been cut open and the registered bags extracted 'and the contents stolen. The registers! bags were afterwards replaced in the ordinaries. Evidently the thief was in a hurry, as he overlooked a few registered letters. It is a complete mystery as to when and how the crime was committed. So far as is known, the bags were intact when transferred at Blaney to the Western mail, which had no mail van attached, and no postal officials in charge beyond seeing them placed on board in the usual way. The railway officials took no further notice ot the bags, and they were not aware of the robbery until the train reached Sydney. It is believed the amount missing does not exceed £2O.
