Commercs Defeat Financi and Law. The Banks and Low and Commercial teams mot in friendly rivalry at the Uecrcation Ground on Thursday afternoon; the game 'being witnessed by a small crowd ol spectators. The teams were : Bank's and Law.—Webster (fullback) ; A. Bewlcy, Nicholson, Williams (three-quarters) ; C. H. Wes- | Vi»n (five-eighth) ; Morey (half) ; Bell, | Nixon (.wings) ; Standish, Wilson, I Scott, Dawson, Simpson (2), Ford ' (forwards). ! Commercials (clorks).—Hill (full- I back) ; N. Bewlcy, E. Curliel(l\ B. | Stohr (three-quarters) ; B. Cottier (ftve-eighOisl) ; Paul (half) ; R. Cutfield and Gibbon (wi'ngs) ; Griffiths, Hume, Court, Kebbcll, Fagan, Baker, and Tuko (forwards). The. game was willing, though some of the players fresh from the office stool were not very lit. Tho first half ended without score, but in the second 1 both teams scored, Bewlcy for the Banks and Law, and Cutfield for the commercial fraternity. • With the scores even, both* teams put forth every effort, and the issue was in doubt till ia, few 'min utes before the call- of time, when, through the agency of G-i|t>bon and Hume, tlte Commercials, sectored a very fluky try, tfnc latter touching down after an exciting scrimmage on the line. None :of the tries were converted, the contest ending in victory for commerce by six points to three. Mr Fr n nk Julian, as referee, took fv lenient view of breaches of the rules, which were mostly due to inexperience. ,j The result came rather as a sliock to the losers', who had greatly fancied their chance. Association' Representative Team. The trial match pliiyed by the NewPlymouth Association Foottmll Clubs was a very good exposition of the game, and good form was shown by the majority of the players. Ml, playihijr their first game the following Saturday. In all probability a match with Wellington will be arranged. On Wednesday next the Aucklanders visit. New Plymouth to play the loc a l team, and in order to give cou'rttry people a chance of witnessing the match a special train will be run from Hbwera. leaving there at 11.10 a.m., and arriving <i New Plymouth at 2.45 p.m.. Tile 4.15 train New Plymouth to Hawera will be delayed till 5.18 p.m. The W H itara and Toko branches connect with both , those trains, for which excursion tickets will be issued 1 . Cheap fares will also be granted by the 7.20 a.m. train from Hawora.
