The Council of the Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution heartily sympathising With the proposal of the Tremler to commercially exploit China, Japan and the East Indies as an outlet for New Zealand produce. . . Giving evidence in a case arising out of a native land case, Sir Robert Stout claimed that native custom should be codified and enacted into law, instead of being, as now, dependent upon what a Native Land Court might from time to time say was native custom. There was great necessity for Maoris and Kuropeans alike to know what native law is. Mr Justice Cooper agreed with this opinion.
