Electric Lighting Scheme.

Site for the Distributing Station. Tenders to be Called. The Rlcctric Lighting- Committee reported to the Itorough Council »n jionday that the repros-ntative of t ■" llnish Co., Mr IVr.n, had arrived »i.<"i coiimnwictd! putting) down the insulation on August 1. and to datu nil luit 26 poles; of the transmission lino from the power houso to the borough boundary have been erected. Mr Fenn flailed attention to tlio unsatisfactory character of the sites proposed for the distributing station in Gill Street yards or on the septic tank site.; Messrs Black and Fenn had been making an inspection of tho town for a better site and suggesttod that if it were possible thu distributing station- should be erected in tl.ip vicinity of the Uiardct Street Ibridgc. The high tension cables would reach this position by way of Cameron and U-ioon Streets, and thus would be practically free from the t«legrnph and telephfono services, which otherwise would entail additional expense in the installation. Tjhere were several sites suggested. The unopened portion of Leraotn Street was very suitaJblo jand one of the best suggested. These sites would allow the high 1 tension cables coming into the (station comparatively free from interruption, anid would also allow of a botitcr distribution of the private and street lighting! circuits

The coniimittoo also mentioned that telephonic communication botwoen the two stations was included in the specification. The: Telegraph Inspector (Mr Furlcy) had ■■been in New TM.vmouth, and on Saturday went over the transmission line and the town with Mr Mack, the Council's elect riIcal engineer, and Mr Fcpm, and nr- ! ranged for nil the «lterations in thitelegrarj'V lin'cs tliat will bo required, giving instructions for these to be put in hand at once. The report was adopted, the Lwuon Street site being Ilxed. It was decide'd, on the motion o Cr. Brooking, seconded |iy Cr, Wilson, that tenders lie called for ti'ie erection of the distributing station, Alternative tenders are to be called for a brick building, and one of wood and brick.
