C.J.C 6HAKD HATIOKAL H££Tll(6. Anticipations bj" lotvot." The racing season 1005-6 will, be opened to-day by the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting. Judging by the splendid acceptances I received the meeting should be most successful. The horses taking part hail from all parts of the colony, and include some of our best performers. Though ranking second in importance to the New Zealand Club meeting, the National evokes more interest, this being especially noticeable this year by the speculation on the double, for quite a number of the big layers have got round their books. The programme for to-day Includes eight events,. and Mr Henrys has juo.idtd punters with some sliH probivins. The meeting will be •.continu--1 eii on Thursday and Saturday. , me opening event is the First Hunters' Hurdles, once round and a distance, lor which ten appear on the . card, .bill Bailey won a double on
the Hat at the Hawke's Bay Hunt Uub meeting last week ; Bill Perkins has proved lie can muster a bit of pace, and if this pair can negotiate; ike obstacles they may make things interesting. Grand Jury has run some decent races in hack hurdle event*, and is a safe juniper,. Ishll take-
Grand Jury, 1 Bill Bailey 2 Bill .Perkins 3
The Trial Hurdles should be.at tho mercy of Romeo, if reports are correct regarding his track work, I shall place—
Romeo 1 Outer 2 Jewel Gun 3
The Winter Cup looks a puzzler on paper, and should provide a great finish, as some of the hest nailers are) engaged. Exmoor, Kremlin, Golden Knight, Master Alix, Wet Reef or Sardonyx may provide the winner, and to make a straight-out selection I like-
Wet Reef 1 y Golden Knight 2 Exmoor 3 Then follows the event of the day, the Grand National Steeplechase. Of the eleven acceptors, three are from Auckland, viz., Haydn, Kaitere- and Inniskillen ; all have been doing good work and are sure to run well. Phaetonitis is Said to have greatly improved since the Wellington meeting' and his party are confident of having a good run for their money. I shall give my vote to Inniskillen. The placing may be— Inniskillen 1 j Haydn 2 Phaetonitis 3
In the Jumpers' Flat Race I like the chances of Rungarawa, Hydrant, Newtown, Tupara and Valium, The finish may be— Rungarawa 1 Hydrant 2 Newtown 3 The placing in the Tally-ho Steeplechase may be— Play fair 1
Agitator 2 Rattlesnake 3
j The distance of the Enfield Steeplechase should be in favour of Lurcher. Defoe, Eurus and The Dauber may provide the place-getters. The placing may be— Lurcher 1 The Dauber 2 ,: Eurus 3.. Nineteen have paid up for the Hack Handicap, six furlongs. According to Southern papers the race is considered almost a moral-for Flying Spark, a ally owned by Sir George Clifford, who will, be making her first apiwarance under silk, Blythemaid, Banzai and Jolly Friar look the best of the others, and on Wellington form will take some beating. I shall placeFlying Spark i . Blythemaid 2 Jolly, Friar 3
