judges are virtuosi from other countries and candidate are submitted to a searching preliminary test before I being allowed to compete. Young I Trowell received a great ovation al-
ter his playing. He Is the first student for twenty years to win the prize at the age of seventeen ; for several years no award had ban made, the judges not believing the standard of candidates warranted it being granted. Trowell is believed to be the first to win' the prize, as he is certainly the first colonial.
