A destructive fire broke out in Foxton at about 5.30 this evening, in Messrs Clarke ami Co.'s rooms, ami, spreading with great rapidity, deist roywl the Dank of New Zealand an:i tire manager's dwelling attached, on the south, and Messrs Chung Wall and Co.'s shop on the north. The origin of the fire is uncertain, but it is said to be a defective chimney.
All the hank documents, cash, etc., tverc got out safely. 'lhc block burnt is one of the oldest in Foxton, and should have been condemned long ago. Fortunately, there j little or nowiml, otherwise the whole j town would probably have gone.
