FOOTBALL.

m SOUTH WALtS Y. QUEEUSLiSD. (Received Aug. 5, 8.16 p.m.) . SYDNEY, Aug. 5. Xew Soutfn Wales defeated Queens, land by 24 to 9. MAMWATU Y. OTAGO- - Peculiar Game of Football. (Per Press Association.) BIiNEDIN, Aug. 5. A football match between Manawatu and Otago was played on . the Caledonian Ground in beautiful weather, with a gentle breeze from the harbour. The game resulted in a win for Otago by four points (a goal irom a mark) to nil. It was a very unsatisfactory exhibition of football, for which a crazy kind of ball was used, and this appeared to be somewhat responsible, as it wobbled and rolled' in every direction but Hie one expected. Manawatu played a hsrrd forward game without much science, and had the best of the game in the first spell, but they had no scoring men. In the second spell, with the wind in their favour, Otago had slightly the best of it, but they also lacked scoring men, and passing rushes by backs went straight across the ground, or someone badly missed a pass, and Manawatu cut in. Of the visitors, Johnstone, McNae, Hepburn and Smith put in the best work of the backs. Skelly, at half, stood out by, himself. Lo WcMy Scott and Ongley gave them good support. Portcous Was the best of the local forwards. The backs lacked combination..
