(Lord Curzon was first appointed Viceroy in 1898, resuming office for a further five years in 1904. Lately relations between him aiid the Com-mander-in-Chief of India, Lord Kitchener, were reported as 'strained, though a satisfactory agreement was afterwards arrived at, A week ago news was received that Lord Curzon was ill, and that his resignation waa probable.)
