The following particulars Irom t Sydney file refer to the ease which led up to the arrest of Mrs James on the charge of bigamy , Three weeks ago, in the Newtowu Police Court, a case was called on, in which the principals were a consta&le and his wife and a young girl, said to lie the niece of tlie wo man. Mr J. W. Abigail, who appeared on that occasion tor Constable Herbert Baker, who was charge 1 with a criminal assault on the girl. Lily James, complained that Mri; Baker and her niece had a revolver, and had threatened to shoot him and accused. A loaded revolver was found in the Court in a bag, in the possessioa of Lily James. Thefr -were also in the bag some bottles, which Were labelled hairwash, but which Mr Abigail contended contained vitriol, that was also going to be used destructively on him and on his client. The revolver and bottle;; were taken charge of by the police, and the case was adjourned. When the case again came before the Court. Mr Abigail asked that the girl Ik again searched, as lie had no desire to have his head iblown off, and he added that outside tinCourt his life had been threatened. In reply to Mr Wish ire, S.M., Lilv 'James said Vshe had no revolver o;i the present occasion, and at a later stage, when giving evidence, she explained that the revolver was a:i old one, 'belonging to.accused, whic'i she cleaned, and for which she ha i bought cartridges. She had learned to use the revolver in New Zealand. She brought the revolver to Court to shoot Baker for what he lra.i done to her. She had fully made up her mind to shoot accused when si (• came down from Junee, and would certainly have done so had the weapon not been taken from her. She gave a detailed account of several alleged assaulis, and said that on one occasion Baker took his revolver from his pouch, and, when she was Jtrugglhig, he threatened that if she did' not keep quiet he would blow her brains out.
