New Plymouth Poultry Show.
CONCLUDING DAY. ART UNION RESULTS. The Poultry Society has every reason to feel satisfied at the success o! the annual show, which came to a conclusion on Saturday evening. It' was well supported throughout thr ;
district,,ami.the judges and visiting ' fanciers were eulogistic in their re- j marks concerning live -quality, on the | whole, of the exhibits. One draw- j back, however, from the point of view of exhibitors outside the. district Wc.s the fact that the dates of the | Taranaki and Hastings shows clashed, and doubtless this lost a considerable number of entries tor eacli Society. Also the lateness of the dates is not in the best interests ol the Society, and an endeavour is mooted to get the rotation of the shows more advantageously fixed by the North Island Association. Messrs G. R. Hutchinson (Auckland) and Whinwray (Cambridge), speaking at the show supper, pointed out the defects which exist in regard to dates, and the expense and inconvenience to fanciers,;who, with a better system of rotation, ( would exhibit more extensively than at present. The system of scattering championships among nhe numerous shows in the North Island does not, Mr Hutchinson stated, find favour in Auckland the Society there advocating that the championships should be confined to four or five principal centres, viz., Wellington, Palavers tun North, Wanganui, Auckland and New Plymouth or Napier. This would find favour with breeders. As a compensation to the smaller societies the fee payable by, thorn to the Association should ' be a nominal one, and the fee payable by the large centres raised. This proposal will probalbly be threshed out later. There was a splendid attendance of the public at the show on Saturday, especially in the evening, when the hall was crowded. The prize exhibits were scanned with interest., ami regarding the exhibition of pigeons* Canaries and cage birds the verdict was unanimous that there has never been a better display inTaranaki. The monster cake, studded with coins, sold remarkably, well, and before 8 o'clock a discriminating public had ■ purchased the last slice. : The Society's art union was als< well patronised, over 1500 tickets toeing disposed of. Considerable in--1 teres! was taken in -the drawing, which was supervised by the Mayor, (Patron to the Society).
