Tuesday next, August Ist., is. the recognised' birthday of •the 1 New Zealand and Australian thorough-bred, consequently all racehorses will be a year older from that date. The Porirua team presided over by J. H. Prosser, numbers as present 22 horses, some, of whom have engagements'at the National .Meeting, also in Australia. Manaipoto is sain to be the best, looking of the lot, and is reported to have put on a ■'couple of hundredweight" of condition since joining the team. Regarding the rumour that all was not well with the" black son of Soult, Prosser informed a Wellington turf scribe tlie other day, that the

horse pulled off a s'hoe and stuck the clip into his toe, and has also been .suffering from muscle soreness. Johnston's Moscow (Stepniak—Corolla) is one of the most forward ; this was the highest priced yearling in New Zealand for last year's sales.

A half sisier to Mahutonga by San Fran is well spoken of; she is expected to make her debut at Napier in the spring. It will be interesting to note what impression San Fran's stock makes. This filly is owned by Mr A. L. 1). Fraser, who paid top price for her at the Te Mahanga sale. The other two yearlings are a colt by Phoe-bus Apollo-Chrysolite, and a filly by The Possible—Hincnuitcpo. Gold Crown, who Is engaged in the New Zealand Cup, has been enjoying a spell since the Feilding meeting. Marguerite and Chivalry are also having a run in the paddock. Flamen, who proved a stayer by acting -as runner up in both the Derby'and St. Legcr Stakes, has been kept going. He also is a New Zealand Cup candidate. Other members of the team are Valois, Aorangi, Waitarcre, Maui, Ex-moor, Tetai, Aotea, Ghoorka, > Boris, a rising three year old filly by Mcrriwee from a sister to Tortulla, and two rising four year olds,-a bay by Gold Rtei —Moutfjjictairc, and a -black by M»kahi—Basilisk. Both of these have yet to make their appearance in public.

At the invitation of Messrs "J. Monk" and "Douglas Gordon" William Lane, the celebrated English jockey, paid a visit, to Porirua, and had a look over the team. He was much pleased Willi Achilles and said lie considered him equal, in appearance, to many o! the best. English horses. Maiiiapoto he thought a nice horse, built on galloping lines. Lane was leading jockey in England two seasons back, and was associated with Pretty Polly in her successes last year. Lane only, adopted the crouching scat after witnessing the American riders, and is now a strong advocates in itslfavour. He considers it allows; more room for lung expansion, also that the weight is on the part of the horse where he feels it least. In the course of feeing interviewed lie expressed surprise that C. Jenkins had not adopted the American system.

Mr B. Champion's pair, Full Cry and Cavalry, are located at Christchurch in readiness for the National Meeting.

Large nominations have been received hy the Wellington Racing Club for the following classic events Wellesl-ey Slakes, Wellington Stakes, North Island Challenge Stakes, and New Zealand St. Lcgct Slakes. Notwithstanding Trumpery's unsatisfactory displays lately, she promises to start a favourite tti the Grand National Hurdles, Trumpery has lx-en heavily supported In doubles.

A distressing accident happened to the ex Mel-bourne jockey, 'George Rohson, .whilst riding at Auckland Park, South Africa. It appears he was struck in the eye by a pebble, whereby the sight has been completely lost.

TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. The usual raectmg of the committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club was held on Krwlay, evening, Mr James Paul" presiding over a full attendance. Mr 0. Samuel, the club's delegate to the Racing Conference held in Wellington a few weeks ago, attended the meeting and presented his repori of tlie proceedings thereat.
