New Plymouth Poultry Show.

A Great Success. < The sixtcomth annual! show of the ' Tornnuki Poultry, Pigeon, and Cag» ' llird Hocpety, which opened at the ' New Plymouth Drill llall on Fri'duy afternoon, is certainly 'the best | exhibition in the history of the soicicty. The numbers of exhibits sliott us ight falling off as compared with last year, but the line quality of tJlo exnibits generally adds unusual interest to the display. Despite the cointer attraction of the Hasting* show on the same dat«, 'there was a very satisfactory entry from outs'ide, the list of exhibitors including, in addition to th;* large number of lociii ntttl provincial fanciers, the following Mrs C. H. Hurnett (Feilding;), David Cog-hill (Waverley), \V, Cotton (Palmerston North), A. H. Faulkner (Hunnythorpo). C. J. Frost (M&kara, Wellinjrton), Gardiner Uros, (Wangai nul), G, R. Hutchinson (Auckland), .1, Knight (Feilding), J. J. Mead I (Masterton), X'icholls and Co. (Northcote), W. Hichings (Wangatrtii), Suck- . lin;t (Ekctahuna), J. F. Watson j (Wancfunui):, H. W. Wilson (Wanganui). , Great credit is due to the President 3 (Mr C. H. Morgan), secretary (Mr 1 E. P. Webster)-, /mil, the committee for the admlhible arrangements, and ex-

c(.*pt that the hall is rather cramped for the displuy, no fault can be found. The judging of Mr W. A.

■jowroan (Blenheim) in the poultry canary and c «ge bird, sectiqns, and )f Mr A. C. Johnstone (Lepperton) in pigeons gave general satisfaction to the fancy, Mr Sowmon, on. this his first visit, was agreeably surprised at the splendid standard of the exhibition all rouml, and stated that the show compared most favourably with much Inrgor exhib lions in this respect. Although the classes were not largo, he remarked, the majority,, of the birds penned would Mold their own anywhere in the colony. There was practically no ''rubbifth" penned, almost every bird being fit for the show ring. Mr Sowman considercH thatithe fanciers throughout the ldi»trict had attained excellent results, a*d were on the right track in their breeding for the prize ring. He w a s particularly pleased with the White an d lirown Ix-ghorns. Silver and Golden Wyalldonx's, and Black Orj pingtuns, which wore the Hiest classes iiv the show.

The {James were a Rood lot, the first and special ill this class going to Mr (!. G. . Howlton. Only osCDorking was shown, A. J. Hopson securing first awl special for a typical specimen. Langshans were onlS' fair, but the Orpingtons were a spllendid lot nil round. ' These were the most numerously represented of any Int-ed, ■Mid are evidently very popular. Mr S. Teed secured the society's £lll 10s trophy, having been a previous winner, by the agency of a magnificent ' single comb black cockerel, whlcli 'won the first and special as the b'est Orpington in the show. The UiW, an importation from the South, attracted much attention among the fancy. Mr .Jos. I-lookcr won in! the cock class, ibut the older bird had no uhance with the cockerel. Mr E. (iriflitihs was successful with a fine pullet, which beat eleven others. The Buff Orpingtons were a nice lot, especially the hens. Messrs Nicholls and Co. won for both cock and epekercl, Mr S. Teed i for hens, and Messrs McEwcn Hroa. in pullets. Messrs W. L. Martip and N. Higgic were successful in some good Orp'mgtonN and other varieties. Plymouth Rocks were few 'in number, brut good, and it is unaccountable that more attention is not paid to this fini breed. The Golden Wyandotte were a feature of the show, there be-Srfg a splendid entry of high-class birds. Captain Hood's exihjblts were hcautiful specimens, and he had quite a field day by winning in cocks, cockerels, and hens, lty again winning in tho first mentioned section ho socured the Society's £lO 10s Wyandotte trophy, l ■ His cockerel gaine<l special distinction by being placed in advance of Ml' B. B. Fremont's oockerel, which was the acoraiitad North Islajnd cliampioim Thij Silver Wy ltndottcs were a great attraction, as the North Island Championrhip was attached to the platings. Tho'Section was strongly represented in number and quality. Mr Jas. Knight won it) the cock class, ihut championship 1 want to Mr <3, K. Hutchinson's (Auckland) cockerel, which also achieved the honour of being adjudged the bjest cock or cockerel in the entire show. The hens and pullets maintained the standard throughout. The winrting hen was also tlyj property of Mr Hutchinson, but the Northern breeder was beaten in pullets by Mr 0. Suckling. Minorca:! wero not numerous, but hero again exhibits wero' pleasing. Mrs M. M Burgess secured the honours with three firsts, gaining first aind special in the cockerel class, 'llhis win, odded to last year's success, secured for the lady exhibitor the Socety's £.') os Minorca trophy. White leghorns were an admirable section, 'both. J'rom point of view of nujuber and 'quality. Air G. Evans securing first and special in the cockerel class, by which he got possession of the Society's £3 r>s Leghorn trophy. The pullets attracted especial notice by the fact that the winner, Mr D. J. McGowan's; secured the pre-eminence of being adjudged the best pullet in tihb entire show. Mr John Bennetts secured the principal Honours in I'ekin Ducks, but Messrs Soler IJros. (Wanganui), who came out an easy first in Indian Runners, won the Society's gold medal for the best duck or drake in tho show. Captuin Hood gviini>d first and special in the selling class, cock or cockerel. The exlniibit of pigeons was the best, ever shown in I'nxaiuiki', -the (magpies standing omt as a specially mcritori- j otis class. The North Island Cham- ' plonship for working homers was reservedly, won iby Mr S. E. l'ipo, who was awardod; tha £5 5s trophy. Mr J. Hurle was anotlrer successful exhibitor, his winnings ituiluding two £5 5s trophies in othf.-r classes. 'Messrs H. W. Dixon and <!. A. Conwy were also prominent winners. In canaries and cago birWs the ex hibition was iirst-class. Mr J, T Watson's exhibits were very creditable to Mm, and he dest'fvod it/he £5 •is trophy which he won with' the crested Norwich. Mr F. (SiKXlacrf, Mr \Y. Deals, and Mrs Grayson were among the principal winners. The show Was'well attendedl during the evening. It will re-open, nt 10 a.m. and continue to 10 p.m. today. The art union drawing takes place this evening.
