EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.
CENTRALISATION DENIED, (Per Press Association.) CHRfISTCHURCH, July 26. Mr Hogben,, Inspector-General of Schools, replying under the direction of the Minister to the Education Board's resolution, regarding the centralising, tendencies of the Department, states that Parliament has placed salaries and the expenditure of the building vote under control of the Department, and the Minister is unaware-in what other way the Department has manifested centralising tendencies, unless it be in carefully watching the expenditure of money. The Chairman said -the Board was continually being interfered with by the Department, and all the Boards in the colony felt this, and found their work restricted by ■ the necessity of applying to the Department for leave to spend a few pounds. There was no doubt in his mind that the Inspector-General had always been hankering to get inspectors under his control.
