o FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The New Plymouth Borough Council met on Monday evening. The Mayor (Mr R. Cock) presided, and [there were also present: Crs. Cliff, [Wilson, Brooking, Collis, Browne, .Tischand Ewing. I— By-Laws.— It was decided to hold a sneeial meeting prior to the next ordinary, meeting of the Council to confirm certain bftJawsj \ ; —Mayoral Chain.— Mr H. E. Fookes wrote that his father, Mr A. C. The amount of spoil against the fence was very small,, and had 'been there for a long time. No damage had been done, and the engineer would not re*, commend the Council taking any aiv tion.—lt was decided to send a reply in accordance with the engineer's report.

—lnspector's Report.— The Borough Inspector (Mr A. H, Kendall) reported that the verandah at the B«3l House Hotel had been re*, paired, and the nuisance therefrom would now cease. Water wasting at several premises had also been attended to. The drainage of the Egmont Boot Factory had been almost completed. The verandah outside Miss Retford's shop had not yet been re-built. Notice for a crossing to be put down in Vivian Street had t>een served on the proprietor of certain promises. A of persons had been warned against having rubbish or weeds in the gutters or oh the footpaths. The owners of fowl runs in Lemon Street had willingly promised to have the same made in accordance with the by-laws, as to construction and distance from boundaries.

Suggestions had been marie with reference to proposed new drainage of premises in Devon, St. Aubyn and Vivian Streets, to point out what were the by-law requirement!). Drains had also been tested at various pre-i mises. ' Since his report on extraordinary water supply, on May 24, permits had been issued for 37 new water closets at the several premises named in a list attached. During the fortnight £5 had teeo collected in fees and licenses. —Reserves Committee.— The Borough Reserves Conv.ujttcc recommended : That the engineer be instructed to trim all hedges and eradicate the furze on the, racecourse reserve on tnc cast side of the Avenue Road. That the sexton be permitted to remove the trees on the south-case side of the cemetery as pointed out to him by Ibe committee. That the 'borough engineer be • Instructed to have the fountain at itivj cemetery fixed as soon as possible. That the borough engineer prepare an estimate of the cost of fixing a window on each side of the mortuary chapel, fixing a ventilator on thereof, making windows at the end ot the building to open, and providing two rows of scats with backs. That prices be obtained for painting with two coats the sexton's cottage and the entrance gate and fence, I the work, to be done under the supervision of the borough engineer. That four loads coarse screenings be placed on the roadway, between the inside gate and the mortuarv Chapel. ■. '
