A TERRIBLE EXPLOSION.
Forty-Five Seamen Killed. 150 OTHERS SEVERELY INJURED ,\ • (Received 'July 23, 3 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, July 22. A boiler exploded in the American gun-boat Bennington in San Diego Harbour. Over 200 men were on 'board. Forty-Jive bodies have already been recovered, and most of the remainder were wounded. Hundreds of spectators on the pier and ferry boats saw many human I bodies and, wreckage shot into the water, gg A seeffl of the upper deck of the gun-boat'fwas carried away from stem to sterr. 1 . The Bennington was beached in a sinking condition. A LATER CASUALTY LIST. (Received July 24, 0.53 a.m ) SAN FRANCISCO, July 23 The Bennington's boilers were regarded as weak, and had lately been repaired. ' Thirty-nine were killed, 2.1 are missing, and 80 were injured.
