The Secretary for Agriculture stated at the Agricultural Conference that when land in Canterbury was required for settlement it was taken up so greedily that he was unable to •?et a piece reserved for agricultural experiments. The Harbour Master reports thai during Ihe live weeks ending July 18, there were 11 berthings at the wharf, the aggregate gross tonnage amounting to -10,871 lons. The imports totalled 5,536 lons, 'including 1,112 fous of railway coal and li.unii sleepers, and 15."> tons of private coal. The exports were 7WI tons, making a total of fi.215 tons of cargo handled. During the last five weeks the dredge has worked lti days at the breakwater, making 254 trips and removing J,">,l2d cubic yards oi sand from the harbour. It appears that a large (|uanlity of sand has been washed into the harbour, and the dredge is busy removing it.

The Minister of Lands told the Agricultural Conference that there was only one more ship to arrive frojn India now which left since the sterilising expert should have commenced operations. The New Plymouth Harbour Board decided at Friday's meeting to impose an additional tax on the shipping ci'iii!)?jn,. s ujuivalent 'to another shilling per !ica<l on the passengers landing or departing. The present, levy is equal to om; shilling for each passiiiger, so that in future the charge on the shipping companies will be two shillings. It is understood that the shipping companies contemplate no increase of fares, recng- , nising that the money being devoted I l>y the Hoard to the improvement ol , the port will afford greater facilities for their vessels trading here.
