COMMITS BIGAMY AND PERJURY. SPARES NOT EVEN HER CHILD, (Received July 19, 9.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, July i 9. A remarkable case Was investigated iu the Police Court to-day. Constable Baker was charged with alleged criminal assault on his stepdaughter. Baker, a couple of days ago, sought to have a maintcnanco order secured by,, his wife .varied on the grounds that the woman was not his wife at the time the order was granted, a charge of bigamy having been preferred against her. A man named James, a confectioner, residing at Waverley, New Zealand, identified her as his wife, whom he married in Wellington and left about eight years ago. When the assault case was opened, the girl stated that her evidence at a previous hearing was untrue. She had never been assaulted, but was told by her mother to say so. At hot mother's instigation she bought vitrol to throw over Baker. Her mother said she would send her to Ireland it Baker was sent into gaol. The Magistrate, discharging the accused, said the woman was a criminal, and ordered her to be held on bail on the bigamy charge.
