Mr* McDonald (mother of ex-Con-stable McDonald) stated that when her son was on bail he visited homu • a charge of Constable O'ilrlen, of Oamuni. The latter condoled with iior, telling her to cheer up. Such hings, he said, were very common. I ■'e had not been in the force three nights before he saw- things done ivhich should not have been. also told her in the presence of witnesses that robberies- ,were common occurrences, and mentioned "bundles .f goods," but did not mention ,a'ny particular place. Letters had been received by witness' daughter, addressed by other constables to her son, to the effect that they (jthe writers and others) might have l>eeii in the same position. Miss McDonald, daughter of the 'ast witness and sister of ex-Con-stable McDonald, for a ldn& time, refused to divulge the names of the writers of the letters- referred to, but Imally she wrote Vlown the name of one of the;, constables, and handed .t to tlie Commission for private inlormation. Constable O'Brien, examined, denied the statements' of Mrs McDonald is to .what ho had said in her house.
