Political Notes.

The Welling!.™ correspondent of the Wauganui Chronicle tells the i story of how the Land Commission report was received :-Thc story of the afternoon is simple. The Bill (Mr Hogg) for abolishing the flour duty, brought in for the purpose of abolishing the flour trust was in possession of the House when the PrcmI icr tried to place the report of the Land Commission on the table. Tin Premier was beaten by the forms oi the House, forced to promsie for half-past seven, and reduced almost to the certainty of getting blocked till midnight, by the debate of ihe Land Commission. In the meantime the report was on the wires, and will be in the evening papers before 7.30. It is a peculiar position.

• # • • The way out proved as easy as the position was strange. Richard the King fell back on the Governor, introduced the report by Governor's message, and to repeated cries o; "PluiikeU ! Governor !" triumphed at the table. His enemies, who had rejected his proposal to table the report with haughty disdain, were forced to stand up with the rest to do honour lo the Governor, and receive the document as a sacred thing not to be interfered with by any form of the House on its privilcdgcd passage to the Houses. I have not heard if his Majesty chuckled, hut I should not be surprised lo learn that he emitted sounds not altogether dissimilar in character. Eventually' the Flour Bill was talked out and Hie said sounds, if audible, would have been fount! to have got nearer to the chuckle considerably. 'Arid to think of it ! Mr Hoge was :Government Whip at the other side of the recess, and a Minister expectant !

The Veterinary Surgeons' Registration Bill, introduced by Mr Davy, provides lor the registration of veterinary surgeons. The Bill provides that it shall he an ollenee to practice under any of the headings without holding the necessary ccrtiticatr after Ist January, ltllifi. Any person who lias puhliely practised as a veterinary practitioner for three years prior to the passing of the Bill ma) continue to -do so on payment of a fee of Ills.

In connection with the Awakim bridge site, over which there was a dispute among ihe settlers, Mr W. T Jennings, M.H.R., lias htvn iufiirnu'. by the M'inistvr for Public "Woik> that he has decided on the lowei site and given instructions for tin timber, etc., required 'to he sent in as soon as possible.

! With respect to the letter from tin New Plymouth branch of the Political Labour League requesting him to ! ascertain the views of the Government in connection with the proposed deviation of the railway line, Mr !W. T. Jennings states he will U glad to make enquiries after he lias consulted with the member for the district, as the latter may have information on the matter. "While Mr Smith is ill," Mr Jennings writes, "I shall be only too glad to assist' him, as he was always obliging to myself and other members."
