" MOTUROA'S" ANTICIPATIONS. The Wellington winter meeting will be concluded to-day. With the exception of the Steeplechase, the fields are large, and should again provide some interesting finishes. The double machine will be worked on the July Steeplechase and Winter Oats. The Stewards' Handicap, six furlongs, is the opening event. Wet Reef is top weight with 111b. more than ho carried ■ to' victory in the Stewards', According to the published report the Gold Reef gelding won with something in hand; he •should therefore take some beating. Touderghie, the runner-up to Wet Reef, has gone up 61b, though he meets the top-Weight on 51b better terms. Tessera finished last in Wednesday's race, I shall again pin my faith to Hon, J, Dj Ornioud's gelding and place— Tonderghic 1 1 Web Reef 2 Coxswain 3 Twenty horses figure in the Trial Plate, six furlongs. Fontenoy, on Hawkc's Bay form, looks a good thing, as in the Te Aro Hack on Wednesday; with the steadier of 11.4 lie ran a. splendid race, finishing just out of the placed division. Blytlte Maid, Captain Shannon, Sir Pcrcivale, Red Cross and Claremont should all be handy at the finish'. 1 will take—
Fontenoy 1 Blythe Maid 2 Captain Shannon 3
Of tlie five acceptors in the Steeplechase 1 like the chance of Nor'-west, though he will have to improve on Wednesday's running, when he was in Ihe rear all the way. However, as (he opposition is only moderate, the old veteran should make things interesting. I shall place—
Nor'-west 1 Jack o' Lantern 2 Dauber 3
A large field of nineteen have paid up lot the Winter Oats, one mile, and the issue appears very o,n?n, KxImoor, Asteroid, lyrist, Royal Blue ami Shrapnel Siftcll should furnish the | winner. Of them I fancy—
fixmoor 1 Asteroid 2 Lyrist 3 The Final Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, should be a good race. In the Winter Hurdles, Kominui made the pace hot for a mile aiwi three-quarters, and the shorter distance to-day will be in his favour Handsome Rose, Pushful, Tupara and Levant all look 'dangerous. This event hears a very open appearance and the finish may find— Handsome Rose 1 Tupara 2 Pushful & In the Hauk Hurdles, one mile and ?■ haU , > °,V C I- TaX Paver and Jewel Ouii should finish in that order. Hie concluding event, the Thoindon Hack, six furlongs, has an acceptance of fourteen ; the best of which appear lo be Banzai, Jolly Friar Recreation, Mango and Onyx. I shall place— Jolly Friar 1 Banzai 2 Mango 3 NOTES HY "MOTUROA.' ■ Creusot's withdrawal in the Wellington Steeplechase was caused by the gelding'breaking a 'blood vessel iu ihc bead whilst doing his preliminary gallop. ' Two substantial totalisator dividends were returned at the Kalgoorlie meeting last month. Agnostic
winner of the Trial, paid £B9 4s, and Minilyaboy, winner of the Hurdle Race, paid £95 12s.
The Dunedin Jockey Club made a nett profit of £484. Totalisator returns showed an increase Of £2815 |in comparison with 1908-4. '
The Carbine horse, Carabine, winner of the Chester Cup and other (Home races, died recently whilst being shipped from India to England. He was purchased by Mr W. Basa, for 3000 guineas, with a vie* to winning the Viceroy's Cup, but he was not right during his sojourn'in India and was not raced. Carabine was insured lor £3500.
Harry Jackson has had the training of G. F. Moore's team for less tltau twelve months, during which time the stable has succeeded in gaining sixteen firsts, besides several seconds. The stable is represented at Wellington by St. Lyra and Foiitcnoy.
i The Wanganui-owncd horses Springbok, Bokio, and Firelight are for sale, and can he purchased at a reasonable figure. All three have proved their ability as gallopers and jumpers.
The Hon. J. D. Ormond has nDmin'ted five of his rising two year olds for the A.J.C. Derby of 1906 vU., Zimmerman, Birkeiihead-Soli-taiie) Cantor (Birkcnhead-Guitar) Idealist, (Birkennead-Ideal) Idacus (Birkenhead—Mount Ida) and Golden Gate (San Francisco— Roie). All being well the Hon. J. D. Ormond should havo a powerful tea m nex t season. Sir Tristram, who has only contested w.f.a. events so ftr, is reckoned by some good judges to be ? n CC ? nd L ßcnown - Tne youngsters " y u "' k «*«i«I are very, highly spoken of. The stable representatives ran well forward at the Hutt on Wednesday, Tondergliie and Outer finishing second In the Stewards and Hack Hurdles respectively. Lyrist was third in the Parliamentary, and Banzai beat a numerous field in the Tfa Aro Hack.
Advance" in his report of the Wellington Steeplechase states that Kaitere finished in a style which stamps him as the best chaser at present in the colony. ■ The same writer, commenting on Waitarcrc sa y S he has a promising career before him. P. Johnson had the mount on Waitarere. < Exmoor was second favourite in the Parliamentary Handicap. The Grafton gelding finished in fourth place.
Shrapnel Shell has now won the Parliamentary Handicap on two occasions. Cannont rode Shrapnel when he scored two years ago Advices received from Svdney state that the imported stallion Gigue died recently in Queensland. GigSc was got by St Simon from the Doncaser mare Danceaway, and .he was only purchased a short time 1 back by a Queensland breeder. As the hoLe was covered by insurance in England to the fuif amount of his purchase money, his owner will escana a serious financial loss. P9
